Shopify product video size, format and length: the exact limits
A Shopify product video can be up to 10 minutes, 1 GB and 4K, in MP4, MOV or WebM. Here are all the official limits in one table, the export settings Shopify recommends, and what to check when an upload fails.
A Shopify product video can be up to 10 minutes long, up to 1 GB and up to 4K (4096 x 2160 px), in .mp4, .mov or .webm. Those are the limits in Shopify's product media documentation, checked on 18 September 2026. If your file fits inside them, it uploads. If it does not, you either re-export it or host it on YouTube or Vimeo and add it by link.
Many guides still quote "60 seconds" and "MP4 or MOV only". That was the limit in 2021. The current documentation allows ten minutes and adds WebM.
Shopify product video limits at a glance
These figures come from three official pages: product media types, Uploading and managing files and Adding product media. They apply to any video you upload yourself, on a product or in Content > Files.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum length | 10 minutes |
| Minimum length | 0.25 seconds |
| Maximum file size | 1 GB |
| Maximum resolution | 4K (4096 x 2160 px), no side above 4096 px |
| Minimum width and height | 100 px |
| Maximum frame rate | 120 fps |
| Accepted formats | MP4, MOV, WebM |
| Media per product | 250 (images, videos and 3D models combined) |
| Videos uploaded per week | 1,000 per store |
| Variant media | Images only: a video cannot be a variant's media |
Two details matter in practice. Shopify converts every upload and serves it to shoppers as MP4 or HLS, so sending WebM or MOV changes nothing for the visitor. And the 250-media cap per product "can't be raised", in Shopify's own words.
One inconsistency exists between official pages: the product media page says "4K (4096 x 2160 px)", the Files page says "UHD" and recommends 3840 x 2160. Both allow a width up to 4096 px, so a standard 3840 x 2160 export passes everywhere.
How many videos a store can hold
Each plan also caps the total number of videos and 3D models in the store, and the storage they use. This is separate from the general file storage.
| Plan | Videos and 3D models | Video storage |
|---|---|---|
| Starter, Retail, Basic, development stores | 250 | 50 GB |
| Grow | 1,000 | 500 GB |
| Advanced | 5,000 | 500 GB |
| Plus | 50,000 | 2 TB |
| Enterprise | 100,000 | 10 TB |
On a Basic plan, 250 videos goes quickly if you add three clips to each of your top 80 products. Plus and Enterprise stores can ask Shopify Support for a higher limit. Stores on a trial plan cannot upload video files at all: the trial format list covers images, PDF, CSV, JS and CSS only.
Recommended export settings for a Shopify product video
The limits tell you what Shopify accepts. The recommended specifications, on the same Files page, tell you what it handles best:
- Aspect ratio: 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4 or 1:1.
- Resolution: 3840x2160, 1920x1080, 1280x720 or 854x480, and their vertical versions such as 720x1280.
- Frame rate: 25, 30 or 60 fps.
- Codecs: H.264 for video, AAC, MP3 or Opus for audio.
Shoppers never see your original file. According to Shopify, "videos display in either 480p, 720p, or 1080p, depending on the viewer's connection speed". A 4K master gains nothing over a clean 1080p export on a product page, and it takes longer to upload and process.
A practical export for a product clip: 1920x1080 for a landscape gallery, 1080x1920 for a vertical format, H.264, 30 fps, AAC audio. Keep the clip short enough to be watched to the end. Shopify publishes no rule on length beyond the 10-minute ceiling, and our guide to shoppable video that converts explains why 5 to 15 seconds per segment works on a product page.
Videos above the limits: use YouTube or Vimeo
A video longer than 10 minutes or heavier than 1 GB can still go on a product page. Upload it to YouTube or Vimeo, then add it to the product with Add from URL. Shopify states that the size and length limits "don't apply to embedded Vimeo or YouTube links".
Three constraints come with that route:
- The YouTube video must be Public or Unlisted. A private video is refused.
- YouTube Shorts links are not accepted. Rewrite the address to the standard
youtube.com/watch?v=format. - Links from any other host, including Google Drive or Dropbox, fail with an error such as "Media processing failed".
Embedded videos play inside a YouTube or Vimeo frame, with that platform's controls and branding. For a short clip meant to answer a product question, a file uploaded to Shopify gives you a cleaner player.
When an upload fails: what the error means
Shopify documents the upload pipeline in three stages (reading, converting, storing) and the errors map to them:
- The video uploads as a generic file with no thumbnail. The extension does not match the real format, typically a .mov renamed to .mp4 by hand. Export it again in the right format.
- "Processing error". The file reached Shopify but could not be converted. Shopify's page says this "is usually caused by how the file was encoded or exported, not by its size or format". Re-export with H.264 and try again.
- "Files failed. Check your network and try again." Despite the wording, for a video this means the store has hit its video storage limit or its 1,000-per-week upload limit.
If the video uploaded fine but does not appear on the product page, the cause is usually the theme. Shopify's documentation says a theme has to support video for it to show, and older versions of supported themes may need an update. All Online Store 2.0 themes built by Shopify support it. Our step-by-step guide to adding video to a Shopify product page covers each display method.
Where these limits leave you
The limits are generous: few product clips come close to 10 minutes or 1 GB. The constraints you will meet day to day are the 250 media per product, the per-plan video count, and your theme's player, which decides whether the clip autoplays, loops or waits for a click.
Storiq plays your clips as full-screen stories on the product page, with files taken from your Shopify Files library and served by Shopify's CDN, so every limit above applies unchanged.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum video length on Shopify?
10 minutes for a video uploaded to a product or to Content > Files. The minimum is 0.25 seconds. A longer video has to be hosted on YouTube or Vimeo and added by URL, because embedded videos are not subject to the upload limits.
What size should a Shopify product video be?
The file must stay under 1 GB and under 4096 pixels on each side. Shopify recommends 1920x1080 or 1280x720, or the vertical versions such as 720x1280, in H.264 at 25, 30 or 60 frames per second. Visitors see the video in 480p, 720p or 1080p depending on their connection.
Can I upload a vertical video to a Shopify product?
Yes. Shopify lists 9:16 and 3:4 among its recommended aspect ratios, and vertical resolutions such as 720x1280 among its recommended sizes. How a vertical video is framed on the page depends on your theme's gallery.
Why won't my video upload to Shopify?
The three documented causes are a file extension that does not match the real format (a .mov renamed to .mp4), a file encoded in a way the media service cannot convert, and a store that has reached its weekly or storage limit for video. The last one shows up as a network error, which is misleading.
